Monmouth, OR – Deputies and animal welfare officials in Polk County removed 41 dogs from a rural property earlier this month after uncovering what they described as unsafe and neglectful living conditions.

According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the investigation began September 11 when an animal control deputy responded to a report of a stray puppy in poor health near McCaleb Road, west of Monmouth. Deputies linked the case to local resident Jeanette Case, who allegedly owned several dogs of the same breed.

On September 23, deputies and 12 Oregon Humane Society staff returned to the property with a search warrant and conducted a large-scale rescue operation. Officials said the dogs, described as large guardian mixed breeds, were lacking proper care and socialization. Several were in borderline health.

During the rescue, deputies discovered three newborn puppies discarded in a remote area and quickly removed them for emergency care. The Oregon Humane Society later confirmed a fourth puppy was found deceased.

Authorities said Case surrendered the dogs voluntarily without incident. She has been charged with Animal Neglect II, with additional charges possible after veterinary evidence is reviewed by the District Attorney’s Office.

The seized dogs are now under the care of the Oregon Humane Society, where medical teams are conducting evaluations and treatment. After recovery, the animals are expected to be placed with temporary foster providers before adoption.

Officials thanked the Oregon Humane Society for their assistance and encouraged residents interested in helping with care costs to contact the OHS Salem branch.
