Yakima, WA – Triple-digit temperatures are expected to scorch the Columbia Basin and surrounding valleys early next week, prompting a heat advisory across eastern Oregon and southeast Washington through 9 p.m. Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Pendleton, afternoon highs from 95 to 103 degrees are forecast Monday and Tuesday in areas including Yakima, Tri-Cities, Hermiston, and The Dalles. Overnight lows may only dip into the mid-60s to low 70s, offering little relief. The heat poses a moderate to major risk of illness, particularly for vulnerable residents without access to cooling.

Cities like Condon, Ellensburg, and Goldendale will also see highs in the upper 90s. In Walla Walla and Pendleton, heat-related stress may build by midday, especially for those working outdoors or without air conditioning. Residents are urged to stay hydrated, avoid midday sun, and limit strenuous activity during peak heat.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends frequent breaks in shaded areas for outdoor workers. Anyone showing signs of heat exhaustion should be moved to a cool space immediately.

This is the first widespread heat advisory of the summer for the region. Warnings remain in effect through Tuesday evening and could be extended if conditions persist.
