Middletown, New York – Drivers in the Hudson Valley could see snow-covered highways by daybreak Sunday as a winter storm drops up to 13 inches across Orange and Putnam counties, paired with wind gusts reaching 45 mph.
According to the National Weather Service in New York, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 6 a.m. Sunday through 6 p.m. Monday. Snow will move in during the morning and afternoon hours Sunday, with the strongest winds expected Sunday night into Monday. Total accumulations between 10 and 13 inches are forecast across both counties.
Interstate 84, Route 17 and the Taconic State Parkway could see rapid accumulation during heavier bursts, especially Sunday afternoon and evening when snowfall rates may approach 2 inches per hour. Blowing snow may reduce visibility on exposed stretches near Newburgh, Middletown and Carmel, creating near-whiteout conditions at times.
Wind gusts up to 45 mph combined with the weight of heavy snow may bring down tree limbs and power lines, causing sporadic outages. Officials urge residents to delay non-essential travel, winterize vehicles and keep emergency kits stocked with food, water and flashlights.
Snow and gusty winds will continue into the Monday evening commute before tapering. Additional advisories remain possible as conditions evolve.
