Morehead City, N.C. – Heavy rain is drenching coastal North Carolina this morning, slowing travel and raising the risk of flash flooding in low-lying areas. Early bands are already soaking Carteret, Onslow, and Craven counties, where road ponding could become a hazard before midday.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, the heaviest rain along the coast will persist through early afternoon before shifting inland. By late day, communities including Greenville, Kinston, and Plymouth could see intense downpours, leading to localized flooding in poor drainage spots. Reduced visibility is expected in the heaviest bands, creating hazardous driving conditions.

Drivers are urged to allow extra travel time, avoid flooded roadways, and keep headlights on in heavy rain. Coastal towns like Morehead City, Jacksonville, and Ocracoke could see temporary street flooding during high tide cycles, while inland rivers may begin rising if rain rates stay high through the evening.

Rainfall will taper gradually overnight, but additional advisories may be issued if training storms develop.
