Syracuse, NY – The National Weather Service in Binghamton has extended a Lake Effect Snow Warning through 7 a.m. Saturday, as heavy snow bands continue to hammer Madison, Onondaga, and Oneida Counties with intense bursts of accumulation.

Forecasters warn that an additional 6 to 15 inches of snow is possible, bringing storm totals between 7 and 16 inches, with localized amounts up to 20 inches in northern Onondaga County. Wind gusts up to 35 mph will also lead to blowing and drifting snow, creating whiteout conditions at times.

The heaviest snow bands are expected to persist Friday afternoon into the evening, with snowfall rates near 2.5 inches per hour reducing visibility to near zero. “Travel could be very difficult to impossible,” the weather service warned, urging drivers to delay nonessential travel and prepare for sudden weather changes.

Officials remind residents that conditions can vary sharply within just a few miles during lake effect events. Those who must travel should carry emergency supplies, including water, food, and a flashlight, and check road conditions by calling 511.

Snow is forecast to taper off early Saturday morning, but hazardous road conditions may linger through the weekend.
