Binghamton, NY – Rain across Central New York is expected to change over to lake effect snow showers this afternoon and tonight, bringing slippery travel conditions and gusty winds to the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, snowfall will generally be light, with minor accumulations of 1 to 2 inches expected across much of the area. However, northwest Oneida County could see locally higher totals of up to 4 inches, particularly near and north of the New York State Thruway corridor.

As colder air moves in, temperatures are expected to fall below freezing later this afternoon and evening, increasing the risk for icy roads. Snow combined with blowing snow may lead to reduced visibility, especially in open and higher-elevation areas.

A Wind Advisory remains in effect for all of Central New York and Northeast Pennsylvania through 1 a.m. Saturday. Winds will remain gusty through the evening, with locally higher gusts possible over hills and ridge tops, which could further impact travel conditions.

In addition to snow and wind, forecasters note that rivers will continue rising into the weekend, and ice movement remains possible, increasing the risk of localized ice jams. Emergency officials are closely monitoring waterways, particularly in flood-prone areas.

Lake effect snow is expected to persist overnight, with additional lake effect bands developing mainly north of Oneida, while brief lake effect snow showers may affect Onondaga and Madison counties as well.

Drivers are urged to use caution, slow down on snow-covered roads, and allow extra travel time this evening and overnight. Residents should also secure loose outdoor items due to gusty winds.
