Vernon, NY – A City of Oneida man was arrested Friday morning after deputies with the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office investigated an abandoned pickup truck reportedly stolen from Vernon Downs.
According to Sheriff Robert Maciol, deputies were called around 6:07 a.m. Friday, November 7, 2025, to the area of VVS Middle School for a report of an abandoned vehicle. Investigators determined that the truck, a blue Chevrolet Silverado, had been stolen earlier from Vernon Downs on Stuhlman Road.
During the investigation, deputies learned that the same suspect allegedly attempted to steal another vehicle from Verona State Park before taking a second pickup. The suspect was later located in the Town of Verona and identified by deputies.
The Oneida County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigative Unit took over the case. The suspect was charged with Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree, a Class E felony, and Attempted Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree, a Class A misdemeanor, under New York State Penal Law.
He was released on his own recognizance with appearance tickets returnable to Verona and Vernon Town Courts at later dates.
The Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate whether additional vehicle thefts may be connected to the case.
