Boonville, NY – A 42-year-old man with special needs was found safe Tuesday evening after becoming separated from his mother on a trail in northern Oneida County, according to Sheriff Robert Maciol.

Deputies were called around 3 p.m. to the Black River Environmental Improvement Association (BREIA) Trail System off Egypt Road in Boonville after the hiker slipped down a ravine and lost contact with his mother. His mother immediately contacted 911 after losing sight of him.

According to the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, deputies, along with the Boonville, Barneveld, and Woodgate Fire Departments, NYS Encon Police, and Forest Rangers launched a systematic search using UTVs, ATVs, and drones.

At approximately 5 p.m., the man was located by members of the Boonville Fire Department, safe and uninjured. He was escorted back to Egypt Road and treated on scene by Boonville Ambulance for mild exposure.

Authorities credited the quick response and coordination among multiple agencies for the successful outcome.
