Oneida County, NY – A Town of Verona man is facing multiple misdemeanor and felony charges following a reported domestic incident in the hamlet of Durhamville late last week, according to the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office.
According to Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol, deputies were dispatched by the Oneida County 911 Center on Tuesday, December 31, to a residence on Main Street in Durhamville after a domestic incident was reported. Investigators allege that Steven G. Burton, 46, became involved in a physical altercation with a family member despite an active stay-away order of protection being in place.
Authorities say Burton allegedly left the scene before deputies arrived and was not located that evening.
On Wednesday, January 1, patrol deputies located Burton elsewhere in Oneida County and took him into custody without incident. He was transported to the Oneida County Sheriff’s Law Enforcement Building, where he was charged with Harassment in the Second Degree, a violation, and Criminal Contempt in the Second Degree, a Class A misdemeanor.
Due to the circumstances of the case, investigators turned the matter over to the Sheriff’s Criminal Investigations Unit for further review. As a result, Burton was additionally charged with Criminal Contempt in the First Degree and Aggravated Family Offense, both Class E felonies under New York law.
Burton was held at the Oneida County Sheriff’s Correctional Facility pending CAP Court. After arraignment, he was remanded on $3,000 cash bail or $6,000 bond, according to authorities. He is scheduled to appear in Verona Town Court at a later date.
The investigation remains ongoing. All charges are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
