Omaha, NE – Strong northwest winds are expected to impact Omaha and the surrounding region throughout Thursday, prompting a Wind Advisory as gusts reach levels capable of causing travel difficulties and minor damage.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, a Wind Advisory remains in effect from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. CST Thursday for portions of southeast Nebraska and southwest Iowa. Sustained northwest winds of 25 to 35 miles per hour are forecast, with gusts reaching up to 55 mph during the day.
The advisory includes Cass, Otoe, Gage, Johnson, Nemaha, Pawnee, and Richardson counties in Nebraska, along with Pottawattamie, Mills, Montgomery, Fremont, Page, and Shelby counties in Iowa. Cities expected to see the strongest winds include Omaha, Council Bluffs, Plattsmouth, Nebraska City, Glenwood, Red Oak, Shenandoah, Beatrice, and Falls City.
Forecasters warn that gusty winds may blow around unsecured objects such as trash bins, outdoor furniture, and holiday decorations. Small tree limbs could be blown down, and isolated power outages are possible, especially in areas with weakened trees or exposed power lines.
Travel may become difficult, particularly for high-profile vehicles such as semi-trucks, vans, RVs, and vehicles towing trailers. North-south oriented roadways could experience strong crosswinds, increasing the risk of sudden lane drift during the morning and afternoon hours.
Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items before winds increase early Thursday and to use caution while driving. Motorists should reduce speed and remain alert for debris on roadways.
Winds are expected to gradually weaken Thursday evening after the advisory expires, though breezy conditions may linger overnight. The National Weather Service recommends monitoring local forecasts and alerts for any changes in timing or wind intensity.
