Omaha, Nebraska – A dangerous stretch of heat is settling into eastern Nebraska this weekend, with heat index values soaring as high as 115°F Sunday and Monday—posing a serious risk for heat illness, especially in urban areas like Omaha, Lincoln, and Bellevue.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha, storm chances today remain limited to areas south of I-80 near the Kansas and Missouri borders, with 20–70% chances of scattered thunderstorms. Otherwise, the bigger concern is the oppressive heat building in. Highs will climb into the 90s starting Saturday, with humidity pushing heat index values into the triple digits statewide.
Sunday and Monday will be the peak of the heat, with widespread “feels like” temperatures of 105° to 115°. Officials urge residents to stay indoors during peak afternoon hours, drink plenty of water, and avoid strenuous outdoor activities. Vulnerable groups such as the elderly and children should take extra precautions.
While isolated rain may return Monday night, offering some relief, Tuesday could bring a slight cooldown with highs closer to the upper 80s—though it will remain muggy.
Heat advisories may be issued soon, and more updates are expected this weekend.
