Omaha, NE – Residents along and east of the Missouri River Valley should prepare for the possibility of severe weather this afternoon and evening, with the strongest risk expected between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, scattered pop-up storms are possible through late afternoon, with a larger thunderstorm cluster expected to move into northeast Nebraska tonight. The agency said storms could be strong to severe, bringing threats of hail, damaging wind gusts, and locally heavy rainfall.

The weather outlook places the Missouri River Valley and surrounding areas under a level 1 risk, the lowest tier on the severe weather scale, though forecasters caution that isolated severe storms cannot be ruled out.

The NWS highlighted a 15–30% chance of pop-up storms this afternoon, followed by a 50–70% chance of thunderstorms overnight, especially in northeast Nebraska. A small chance (5–10%) of a severe storm is also possible.

Officials recommend monitoring forecasts throughout the day, especially if planning outdoor activities. The strongest storms are expected during the late afternoon commute window from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., with additional storm chances continuing overnight into early Wednesday morning.

Safety tips: Have multiple ways to receive weather alerts, avoid outdoor events if storms approach, and prepare for sudden changes in weather conditions.
