Omaha, NE – Thanksgiving weekend travelers in eastern Nebraska face dangerous road conditions starting Friday as a powerful winter storm moves into the region, bringing up to 10 inches of snow, strong winds, and blowing drifts that could severely reduce visibility on highways.

According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, a Winter Storm Warning is now in effect for much of eastern Nebraska and western Iowa through 6 a.m. Sunday. Accumulations of 4 to 8 inches are likely across Omaha, Lincoln, and Norfolk, with some pockets near the Iowa border seeing totals closer to 10 inches. Winds gusting 25 to 35 mph may lead to whiteout conditions in rural areas.

Travel will be especially hazardous along I-80, I-29, US-77, and US-275, where blowing and drifting snow could make roadways slick and impassable late Friday into Saturday. Road crews are preparing, but ice buildup and rapidly falling snow rates may overwhelm efforts during peak hours.

If you’re hitting the road post-Thanksgiving, consider delaying travel or checking 511.nebraska.gov for the latest highway conditions.

The snow is expected to taper early Sunday, but subfreezing temps could keep road hazards in place into Monday.
