Omaha, Neb. – Dangerous heat will settle over eastern Nebraska and western Iowa today, with the National Weather Service warning that heat index values could climb as high as 108 degrees through Saturday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, a heat advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. for Omaha, Lincoln, Fremont, Council Bluffs and surrounding communities. The combination of high humidity and soaring temperatures is expected to make outdoor conditions unsafe for prolonged activity.
Cities including Bellevue, Papillion, Beatrice, Norfolk, and Columbus are under the same alert, along with areas across southwest Iowa such as Shenandoah, Red Oak, and Glenwood. Health officials advise residents to drink water frequently, limit outdoor work to early morning or evening hours, and check on vulnerable neighbors.
The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services urges anyone without air conditioning to call 211 for shelter options. Heat illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke can develop quickly in these conditions, particularly for children, the elderly, and those working outside.
The advisory is set to expire tonight, but temperatures will remain near 96 on Sunday before easing slightly as scattered thunderstorms develop into Monday.
