Nebraska – Headlights glow through a low gray haze across eastern Nebraska and western Iowa as fog thickens in pockets, muting landmarks and shortening sightlines. The quiet start hides a developing winter pattern that could complicate end-of-year travel by Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, fog is expected to redevelop across parts of eastern Nebraska and western Iowa, with visibility dropping below one mile in some areas. The concern stretches from Omaha and Council Bluffs westward into portions of southwest Iowa, especially during the early hours.
As the fog lifts, attention turns to Sunday. Light snow teams up with breezy winds, reducing visibility at times. While snowfall amounts stay light, the combination of flakes and wind may briefly obscure roads, particularly along I-80, I-29, and rural highways exposed to open fields.
Omaha, Bellevue, Papillion, Council Bluffs, and surrounding communities should plan for changing conditions by Sunday afternoon. Winds increase from the northwest, ushering in colder air. Temperatures fall sharply Sunday night, dropping into the teens. Any lingering moisture may freeze, raising the risk of slick spots on bridges and ramps.
Plan ahead if traveling Sunday. Slow down in fog. Use low-beam headlights. Allow extra space between vehicles. After all, even light snow can cause problems when visibility drops quickly and pavement cools fast.
Monday brings sunshine but colder air, with highs struggling into the lower 20s. The cold pattern holds into midweek, shaping New Year’s Eve plans with dry but brisk conditions. New Year’s Day 2026 looks quiet, though winter firmly remains in control.
Meteorologists continue monitoring additional systems later next week. More alerts could follow as winter settles in.
