Omaha, Neb. – Drivers across eastern Nebraska and western Iowa faced hazardous travel early Wednesday as dense fog rolled into the region, cutting visibility to under a half mile in some areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Omaha, patchy fog developed before sunrise, especially along the Interstate 80 and Interstate 29 corridors near Omaha, Council Bluffs, Fremont, and Norfolk. Conditions are expected to gradually improve through late morning as visibility lifts.

Officials advised drivers to slow down, use low beam headlights, and leave extra distance between vehicles. The risk of sudden near-zero visibility on rural highways and bridges could lead to dangerous situations, particularly in northeast Nebraska counties such as Dodge, Washington, and Burt, as well as western Iowa counties including Pottawattamie and Harrison.

Morning commuters are urged to remain alert for vehicles pulling onto roadways or making turns in limited visibility. Drivers should avoid using high beams, which can reflect off the fog and make conditions worse.

The fog is expected to improve after sunrise, but additional morning fog events remain possible through the week.
