OMAHA, Neb. – A surge of Arctic air is sweeping into eastern Nebraska tonight, bringing the coldest morning of the season by early Sunday. Temperatures will plunge well below freezing after sunset, bottoming out in the upper teens to near 20° by 7 a.m., with wind chills dropping into the single digits across much of the area.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, rain showers will taper off this evening as cold, dry air moves in from the north. Gusty winds up to 25 mph will make the air feel even colder through early Sunday morning before easing by midday. The coldest wind chills—between 5° and 10° above zero—are expected in and north of the Omaha metro, including Blair, Fremont, and Tekamah.
Sunday will stay brisk, with highs only in the mid-30s and a biting north wind. While no additional precipitation is expected, the combination of clear skies and light winds Sunday night will allow another freeze, especially in rural and river valley locations. Residents should protect sensitive plants and ensure outdoor pets have shelter from the cold.
Road crews report no significant icing issues, but drivers should remain alert for patchy frost on bridges and overpasses early Sunday. The cold pattern will ease slightly early next week as temperatures rebound toward the mid-40s by Tuesday.
This early-season chill signals a fast-approaching winter pattern, with longer nights and colder mornings becoming more frequent by mid-November.
