Omaha, NE – Nebraskans may once again catch a brilliant northern lights display tonight, with skies expected to remain mostly clear across the region as a powerful geomagnetic storm continues.
According to the US National Weather Service Omaha/Valley and the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center, a G4 (Severe) geomagnetic storm remains active, giving residents across the Plains another rare opportunity to view the aurora borealis this far south.
Forecast models show clearing skies through the evening, with only thin high clouds lingering overnight, which should not prevent visibility for most areas. The best viewing window is expected between 9 p.m. and 1 a.m., particularly in rural areas away from light pollution. Residents in Omaha, Lincoln, and Norfolk could still spot faint green or red hues along the northern horizon if conditions hold.
Temperatures will dip into the 30s and low 40s overnight, so those heading out to view the aurora should dress warmly.
