Omaha, NE – Gray, gloomy conditions are expected to continue across eastern Nebraska as low clouds linger into Friday. The National Weather Service Omaha/Valley office shared new data illustrating how frequent low cloud cover becomes in late fall and winter, with this week fitting the seasonal trend.
According to the latest outlook, Friday in Omaha will remain mostly cloudy, with a high near 48 degrees and an overnight low around 34 degrees. Forecasters note that low-hanging clouds form more easily during this time of year due to longer nights, weaker daytime heating, and shallow layers of moisture becoming trapped near the surface.
A long-term ceiling analysis from 1973 to 2025 highlights two major seasonal peaks in low cloud frequency—midwinter and late fall—matching the overcast conditions residents have experienced this week. These cloud patterns typically ease heading into late spring and summer when sun angle and daily heating increase, limiting low cloud formation.
With another cloudy stretch ahead, NWS Omaha encourages residents to take steps to combat seasonal gloom, such as spending time outdoors, exercising, and maintaining a healthy routine.
More updates will be issued as conditions evolve into the weekend.
