Omaha, NE – A widespread winter weather system is impacting northeast, east-central, and southeast Nebraska as well as southwest Iowa, where a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through midnight tonight, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Omaha/Valley.
Northern Nebraska (Knox & Pierce Counties)
Communities including Niobrara, Verdigre, Bloomfield, Plainview, Creighton, and Pierce can expect an additional 3–5 inches of snow, with winds gusting up to 35 mph. These conditions will make travel difficult on rural roads and open stretches of Highway 81 and Highway 20.
Eastern & Southeast Nebraska / Southwest Iowa
A broad area—including Antelope, Boone, Madison, Platte, Colfax, Butler, Saunders, Seward, Lancaster, Cass, Otoe, Saline, Jefferson, Gage, Johnson, Nemaha, Pawnee, and Richardson in Nebraska, as well as Mills, Montgomery, Fremont, and Page in Iowa—is seeing a complex winter mix.
Light snow and light freezing rain early this morning will transition to steady snow by midday. Additional accumulations of up to 4 inches are expected, with ice up to one-tenth of an inch in some locations. Winds will gust as high as 45 mph, creating areas of blowing snow and sharply reduced visibility.
Cities such as Omaha metro, Lincoln, Norfolk, Columbus, Beatrice, Nebraska City, Auburn, Shenandoah, and Red Oak may experience icy roads before the switch to snow, leading to hazardous conditions during both morning and evening travel periods.
NWS advises drivers to slow down, leave extra distance, and check 511 for Nebraska and Iowa road conditions. Bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads will become slick quickly.
Snow and wind will gradually diminish late tonight.
