Omaha, NE – A potent storm system is moving through Nebraska, bringing widespread rain and thunderstorms, with localized risks of severe weather. Southeast Nebraska, including areas along I-80, could see strong wind gusts up to 60 mph and brief, weak tornadoes starting tonight.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), most areas will receive 1 to 2 inches of rain by early Tuesday. Flooding on roadways, especially near poorly drained areas, is a significant concern. Drivers along I-80 should exercise caution, as reduced visibility and ponding are likely during heavy downpours.
Storm activity is expected to increase after 3 p.m. Monday, continuing overnight into early Tuesday. Wind speeds could reach 50 to 60 mph, making travel difficult, particularly for high-profile vehicles. A chance of thunderstorms remains through midnight, with lighter rain tapering off by Tuesday morning.
Tuesday will bring sunnier skies, but cooler temperatures with a high of 51°F and northwest winds gusting up to 29 mph. By Wednesday, conditions will remain dry and breezy, with highs in the mid-40s and overnight lows dipping into the 20s.
Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items, avoid driving through flooded roadways, and monitor local updates for any potential tornado warnings. Flooding risks may persist in low-lying areas as rain accumulates through Monday evening.
This storm serves as a reminder to prepare for severe weather by reviewing emergency plans and ensuring cell phones are charged for weather alerts.
