Nebraska City, NE – Heavy rain and possible flash flooding could hit parts of southeast Nebraska and southwest Iowa tonight, with storms expected to linger through Sunday. The National Weather Service in Omaha has issued a Flood Watch beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday, covering cities including Beatrice, Nebraska City, Auburn, and Shenandoah.
According to the NWS, thunderstorms will develop this evening and may repeatedly track over the same locations, dropping 1 to 3 inches of rain in a matter of hours. Localized totals could exceed 5 inches in southeast Nebraska. Additional heavy rain is possible late Sunday, especially for Nemaha, Pawnee, and Richardson counties.
Flooding of creeks, rivers, and low-lying roads is possible, and drivers are urged to avoid crossing water-covered roads. Residents in flood-prone areas should prepare to move to higher ground if necessary and monitor local alerts in case Flash Flood Warnings are issued overnight.
The Flood Watch remains in effect through Sunday morning for southwest Iowa and until late Sunday night for far southeast Nebraska. More advisories may follow if storms persist into early Monday.
