Omaha, NE – Severe thunderstorms are expected to ramp up quickly by mid-afternoon Thursday, with the highest impacts targeting the evening commute along and south of Interstate 80.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, storms will begin developing as early as 2 p.m., with the greatest threat window between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. across eastern Nebraska and southwest Iowa. A slight risk (Level 2 of 5) is in place, with the most intense activity expected near the Nebraska-Kansas border before tracking east.
Cities including Lincoln, Beatrice, Nebraska City, and Falls City face the highest risk for damaging wind gusts reaching up to 65 mph and hail up to 1.75 inches in diameter. Omaha and surrounding areas may still see strong storms, especially into the evening hours as activity expands along the I-80 corridor.
An isolated tornado cannot be ruled out, particularly in far southeast Nebraska near Hebron and Marysville, Kansas. Storms are expected to organize and push southward later in the evening.
Residents should secure outdoor objects, avoid travel during peak storm hours, and ensure multiple ways to receive warnings. Conditions are expected to improve after midnight, but additional updates or warnings may be issued as storms develop.
