Old Forge, NY – Residents in northern Herkimer County are dealing with intensifying winter conditions today as a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 7 p.m. Monday, bringing moderate to heavy snowfall and rapidly deteriorating travel conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Albany, snow totals between 7 and 14 inches are expected across the region, especially along and north of Route 28, including the communities of Old Forge, McKeever, Eagle Bay, Big Moose, Nobleboro, and Atwell. Snowfall rates may reach 0.5 to 0.75 inch per hour at times through tonight, creating steadily worsening conditions on local roads.
Forecasters warn that roadways will likely become slick and hazardous today through Monday as snow continues to accumulate. Gusty winds accompanying the storm are expected to blow snow across road surfaces, further reducing visibility—at times dropping visibility below one mile. Travel may become difficult throughout the region, particularly during the overnight hours and the Monday morning commute.
Drivers are urged to allow extra time, slow down, and avoid unnecessary trips while the storm remains underway. The combination of falling snow, blowing snow, and reduced visibility may create unpredictable road hazards that can change within minutes.
Residents who must travel should keep emergency supplies on hand, including food, water, and a flashlight in case of delays or emergencies. Officials emphasize staying informed about updated conditions as the storm evolves.
