Tulsa, Oklahoma – A powerful winter storm is poised to disrupt much of Oklahoma beginning Friday afternoon, bringing the threat of heavy snow, icy roads, and bitter cold that could linger through the weekend. Travel conditions are expected to deteriorate quickly, especially Friday evening as snow intensifies across large portions of the state.

According to the National Weather Service in Tulsa, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Friday afternoon through late Saturday night for eastern, northeastern, and southeastern Oklahoma. Snow accumulations of 4 inches or more are possible, with some areas near the Red River also facing sleet and light ice accumulation. Wind gusts could approach 35 mph Friday, worsening visibility and creating drifting snow.

Tulsa, Bartlesville, Muskogee, McAlester, Okmulgee, Tahlequah, and surrounding communities could see prolonged periods of snow that make highways like I-44, U.S. 75, and State Highway 51 difficult to navigate. Emergency managers warn that the Friday evening commute may be especially hazardous.

Dangerously cold air will follow the storm, with wind chills dropping sharply Friday night and remaining a concern through Sunday morning. Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, prepare vehicles and homes for winter conditions, and ensure pets and vulnerable neighbors are protected.

The watch may be upgraded as confidence increases, and additional advisories are likely as the storm approaches.
