Oklahoma City, Oklahoma – Towering clouds may bubble up across central Oklahoma this afternoon, bringing isolated thunderstorms before a much hotter pattern takes hold. The air already feels heavy, and by early next week the summer heat will become the bigger story for Oklahoma City and surrounding communities.

Residents across central Oklahoma should prepare for two different weather concerns over the next several days: scattered thunderstorms today followed by a prolonged stretch of dangerous heat. According to the National Weather Service in Norman, a 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms develops after 1 p.m., with a few storms lingering into the evening. While widespread severe weather is not expected, lightning, brief heavy rain and gusty winds could accompany stronger cells. Tornado potential remains low, but staying weather-aware remains important whenever thunderstorms develop.

Today’s high reaches 91 degrees, but humidity will push the heat index near 99 degrees during the afternoon. If you’re heading to parks, sporting events or outdoor festivals, drink plenty of water and take frequent breaks in the shade.

The weather becomes much hotter beginning Monday as sunshine dominates. High temperatures climb to 98 degrees Monday, then peak near 103 degrees Tuesday, with triple-digit heat continuing into midweek. The prolonged heat could increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for those working outdoors or without reliable air conditioning.

Drivers along Interstate 35, Interstate 40 and Interstate 44 should remain alert for sudden downpours this afternoon that may briefly reduce visibility. By early next week, the greatest concern shifts to extreme pavement temperatures and vehicle stress during the hottest part of the day.

Looking ahead, above-normal temperatures are expected to continue through much of next week across Oklahoma. Keep an eye on updated forecasts, as additional heat headlines could become necessary if temperatures continue to climb.
