OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma – A humid breeze and streaks of distant lightning mark a brewing shift across the Plains this Thursday morning. By Friday, a powerful fall system will surge across central Oklahoma, bringing widespread rain, rumbling thunderstorms, and a risk of gusty winds from Norman to Guthrie. Drivers should prepare for slower commutes and brief ponding on highways, especially along I-35 and I-40 corridors.

According to the National Weather Service in Norman, storm chances climb sharply late Thursday and peak Friday as a frontal boundary sweeps through. Thunderstorms may deliver heavy rainfall and wind gusts near 25 mph, with localized downpours capable of producing over an inch of rain. While severe weather is not widespread, a few stronger cells could bring small hail and lightning that may disrupt outdoor events and early travel plans.

Rain will linger through Saturday morning before cooler, drier air filters in from the northwest. Highs will slide from the lower 80s Thursday to the low 60s Saturday, creating a brisk, fall feel for the weekend. By Sunday, skies clear and temperatures rebound to near 70°F — a perfect setup for outdoor cleanup or late-October festivals around Bricktown or Lake Hefner.

Farther north across the Midwest, the same front will end the growing season from Iowa to Virginia with widespread freezes and even a few early flakes near the Great Lakes. For Oklahoma, it’s a wet, transitional stretch — one that officially signals the arrival of late-fall weather as October nears its close. Residents should keep umbrellas and rain gear handy through Friday night, then enjoy a bright, breezy finish to the weekend.
