Oklahoma City, OK – Scorching heat and a slight thunderstorm risk return to central Oklahoma on Thursday, July 17, marking the start of a dangerous stretch of summer weather.

According to the National Weather Service in Norman, heat index values could hit 100°F in Oklahoma City by early afternoon Thursday. A slight chance of thunderstorms may develop after 1 p.m., mainly affecting areas south of I-40, including traffic-heavy corridors like I-35 and US-62. While rain chances are low at 20%, any storms could bring brief gusty winds and lightning.

High temperatures will top out near 95°F Thursday and climb to 96°F or higher by Friday. Winds from the south at 10 to 15 mph will offer little relief. Residents should limit outdoor activity, drink water regularly, and ensure pets and elderly neighbors stay cool.

Friday through Sunday will remain dangerously hot and dry, with afternoon highs in the mid to upper 90s and mostly sunny skies. Heat index values may continue to push triple digits. Overnight lows offer little reprieve, hovering in the mid-70s.

Looking ahead, next week promises more of the same. Monday and Tuesday are forecast to remain sunny and hot, with highs of 98°F by July 22.
