Del City, OK – A driver crashed into the back of a fire truck on I-40 westbound at Scott Street early Wednesday morning while emergency crews were responding to another accident.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the fire truck was blocking a lane with its lights flashing when the driver failed to slow down or change lanes, striking the rear of the vehicle. Just moments before the collision, a Del City police officer had been parked behind the fire truck, a factor authorities say could have led to a more dangerous outcome.

Officials reported that no firefighters were injured in the crash. The driver, who allegedly had no insurance and was using an illegal paper tag, was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Citations issued included failure to slow down or move over for a stationary vehicle displaying flashing lights, carrying a minimum fine of $1,244. Additional citations were issued for the tag violation and lack of insurance.

Troopers emphasized the importance of Oklahoma’s “Move Over” law, which requires drivers to slow down or change lanes when approaching emergency or service vehicles with flashing lights. They warned that ignoring the rule endangers both first responders and motorists.

“When you see flashing lights, move over or slow down,” OHP said in a statement. “It’s the law and it protects our first responders who are working to help others.”
