Oklahoma City, Oklahoma – A Tornado Watch remains in effect for 52 counties across central, eastern, and southern Oklahoma until 10 p.m. CST Friday, placing Oklahoma City, Tulsa, and surrounding communities at risk for tornadoes, wind gusts up to 70 mph, and large hail during the evening commute.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Tornado Watch 15 includes Oklahoma, Tulsa, Cleveland, Canadian, Payne, Muskogee, Rogers, and dozens of surrounding counties as atmospheric instability supports rotating supercells capable of producing tornadoes.
Storms may intensify rapidly before sunset.
Major corridors including Interstate 35, Interstate 40, Interstate 44, and the Turner Turnpike could see sudden road condition changes if warnings are issued. Tulsa International Airport and Will Rogers World Airport may face temporary ground delays. School events and outdoor activities across Oklahoma City Public Schools and Tulsa Public Schools could be affected.
Residents should identify a sturdy shelter now and secure loose outdoor items.
The strongest tornado potential is expected before 9 p.m., with storms shifting east overnight into Arkansas and Missouri. Additional thunderstorms may redevelop overnight into early Saturday as the system advances.
The Tornado Watch remains in effect until 10 p.m. CST Friday.
