Oklahoma City, Okla. – Tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds are possible across much of Oklahoma through 10 p.m. Sunday, as a tornado watch blankets 31 counties from the Panhandle to the metro.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, Tornado Watch 287 includes high-risk areas such as Oklahoma, Cleveland, Canadian, Comanche, and Custer counties. The watch, issued at 3:40 p.m. CDT, is set to remain active until 10 p.m. CDT and affects central, western, and parts of northern Oklahoma.

Residents in cities like Oklahoma City, Norman, Lawton, Enid, and Woodward are urged to stay weather-aware this evening, with severe storms capable of producing tornadoes and wind gusts over 70 mph. Emergency management officials recommend securing outdoor objects, charging mobile devices, and identifying shelter locations in case warnings are issued.

Travel on highways including I-40, I-44, and U.S. 183 could become dangerous with rapidly changing weather conditions. Rural communities, especially in open terrain, should remain especially vigilant due to fast-moving storm cells.

This is the first widespread tornado watch of the month for Oklahoma, coming during peak severe weather season. More watches or warnings may be issued as storms evolve.
