Norman, Oklahoma – Strong storms are sweeping across southeastern and central Oklahoma Thursday, bringing the risk of damaging wind gusts and large hail to 18 counties under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 4 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, counties under watch include Atoka, Bryan, Carter, Choctaw, Coal, Hughes, Jefferson, Johnston, Lincoln, Love, Marshall, Murray, Okfuskee, Pittsburg, Pontotoc, Pottawatomie, Pushmataha, and Seminole. These areas could see storms producing wind speeds over 60 mph and hail up to quarter-size through the afternoon.
Travelers along U.S. Highways 69 and 75, as well as I-35 through Love and Carter counties, should prepare for sudden visibility drops and debris on roadways. Power outages are also possible if trees or lines are downed. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items and avoid unnecessary travel during active storm periods.
This system follows several days of unsettled weather across the Southern Plains, heightening soil saturation and flash flood potential in low-lying areas.
The thunderstorm threat is expected to diminish by early evening, but additional weather advisories may be issued later today. Stay tuned to local alerts and NOAA Weather Radio for updates.
