Amarillo, Texas – Strong storms are set to push into the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles Thursday, bringing hail, gusty winds, and dangerous lightning. Afternoon and evening travel along I-40 could be slowed by heavy downpours and reduced visibility. Residents should stay weather aware and avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, scattered to numerous thunderstorms will develop Thursday afternoon. Hail and 30 mph wind gusts are the primary risks, though localized flooding cannot be ruled out. Thunderstorm chances persist each day through Monday, but the immediate concern is Thursday’s severe potential.

Storms may first form east of Dumas and Dalhart before sliding toward Amarillo, Canyon, and towns along U.S. Highway 287. Outdoor events could be interrupted by lightning, while power outages may occur in rural areas if strong winds down power lines. Officials advise charging phones, securing outdoor items, and monitoring updates before driving in storm zones.

Friday’s risk lowers, though isolated showers remain possible. Saturday brings a quieter period, with partly sunny skies and highs in the upper 80s. More showers return Saturday night into Sunday before conditions dry again early next week.

Warnings and advisories may be issued if storm intensity increases Thursday. Spotter activation is not planned at this time, but the situation could change quickly.
