Amarillo, TX – A Red Flag Warning remains in effect for the western Oklahoma and Texas Panhandles from noon to 9 p.m. CST Monday due to strong winds and critically low humidity levels, increasing the risk of wildfires.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, the affected areas include Cimarron County in Oklahoma and Dallam, Sherman, Hartley, Moore, Oldham, Potter, Deaf Smith, Randall, and Palo Duro Canyon in Texas. Winds are expected to reach sustained speeds of 25 to 35 mph, with gusts up to 60 mph. Relative humidity levels could drop as low as 7%, creating an environment highly conducive to rapid fire spread.
The Red Flag Threat Index is forecasted between 6 and 8 in the western Panhandle, indicating dangerous fire conditions. Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor activities that could generate sparks, such as burning debris or using equipment that produces open flames.
Fire departments and emergency responders remain on high alert, monitoring conditions throughout the day. Residents in the affected areas should be prepared for rapidly changing fire behavior and have evacuation plans in place if needed.
Authorities emphasize the importance of extreme caution, as any fire that starts could spread quickly under these conditions. The public is advised to stay updated on local advisories and report any signs of fire immediately.
