NORMAN, Okla. – A strong cold front moving across Oklahoma will bring biting winds and a sharp drop in temperatures by midweek, with a Freeze Watch in effect from late Wednesday night through Thursday morning. Wind gusts could reach 50 mph before the chill sets in.
According to the National Weather Service in Norman, subfreezing temperatures as low as 28 degrees are possible across central, northern, northwestern, and southwestern Oklahoma, extending into northern Texas. The Wind Advisory remains active from 4 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, followed by the overnight freeze threat.
Tree limbs and unsecured outdoor items could be blown down during Wednesday’s gusty conditions. A few power outages are possible. Once winds settle, frost and freeze conditions may damage crops and sensitive vegetation, especially in rural areas like Harper, Custer, and Beckham counties.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor objects, protect exposed plumbing, and cover tender plants before temperatures plunge Wednesday night. Drivers of high-profile vehicles should use extra caution during peak wind hours.
The Freeze Watch remains in effect through Thursday morning, with additional cold-weather alerts possible if temperatures dip further later in the week.
