Amarillo, Texas – Scorching heat is gripping the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles, sending temperatures soaring as high as 106 degrees in Amarillo and surrounding communities through 9 p.m. Wednesday, with a fresh heat advisory set to begin Thursday afternoon. Local residents and visitors at Palo Duro Canyon State Park are facing a renewed threat, as highs hit 105 degrees from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, the heat advisory covers much of the central and western Panhandles, including Potter, Randall, Dallam, Cimarron, and Armstrong counties, as well as key cities like Amarillo, Dalhart, Hereford, Guymon, and Stratford. Officials warn that the combination of extreme heat and high humidity may lead to heat-related illnesses, especially for those spending time outdoors or working in the sun.

Area health departments urge residents to drink plenty of water, avoid strenuous activity during peak heat, and check on neighbors, seniors, and pets. Lightweight, light-colored clothing and breaks in air-conditioned spaces are strongly recommended. Outdoor workers are urged to follow OSHA guidance with regular shaded rest breaks.

The risk for heat exhaustion or stroke remains high until at least Thursday night. Expect additional advisories if the pattern persists.
