Amarillo, Texas – Isolated thunderstorms could develop across the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles Monday afternoon and evening, bringing brief but potentially strong weather, including gusty winds and heavy rain.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, storm chances remain low—ranging from 10 to 30 percent—but any storms that form may intensify quickly. The highest risk areas lie south of Amarillo, including Hereford, Dimmitt, and Wellington, between mid-afternoon and early evening.
Primary threats include lightning, localized downpours, and wind gusts that may disrupt travel, especially on U.S. Highway 60 and U.S. Route 287. Evening storms could persist overnight across areas like Borger, Guymon, and Perryton, where chances remain around 10 percent.
Residents are urged to monitor local alerts and remain indoors during any thunderstorm activity. Power outages are unlikely but possible in stronger cells, so charging devices and securing outdoor items is advised.
Storm chances decrease after midnight, but updates will be issued if conditions change. The Panhandle region remains under monitoring as similar patterns could return midweek.
