Amarillo, Texas – A slow-moving wave of heavy storms could trigger flash flooding across the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles Wednesday night, with a Flood Watch in effect until 7 a.m. Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, storms with intense rainfall could repeatedly move over the same areas—an effect known as “training”—leading to rapid water accumulation in flood-prone zones. The watch includes Potter, Randall, Carson, Deaf Smith, Moore, and Palo Duro Canyon in Texas, as well as Beaver County in Oklahoma.

Cities including Amarillo, Canyon, Hereford, and Perryton could see water pool on roads, overwhelm urban drainage systems, and cause localized stream flooding. Travel may become hazardous in low-lying spots like Lake Marvin Road and Washburn Creek crossings.

Residents in flood-prone zones are urged to stay weather-aware, avoid low-water crossings, and charge electronics in case of power outages. Conditions are being driven by high moisture levels (PWATs up to 2 inches) and upper disturbances lingering into early Thursday.

The Flood Watch remains in effect through the morning commute. More flood warnings may follow if rainfall totals intensify overnight.
