Norman, Oklahoma – A line of strong to severe thunderstorms is expected to develop across central and southeastern Oklahoma Sunday afternoon, prompting a Severe Thunderstorm Watch in effect until 9 p.m.
According to the Storm Prediction Center, the watch includes 20 counties from Oklahoma City’s outer suburbs to the Texas border, including Cleveland, Atoka, Bryan, Le Flore, and Pottawatomie. These storms could bring damaging wind gusts over 60 mph, large hail, and dangerous lightning through the evening.
Cities including Norman, Durant, Ada, and McAlester are all within the threat zone. Outdoor events may be disrupted, and motorists should avoid travel in storm-prone areas during peak activity between 4 and 8 p.m. Power outages and tree damage are also possible as storms intensify.
Residents are urged to monitor local alerts, charge electronic devices, and secure outdoor items that could become airborne. This watch follows several days of unsettled weather across the southern Plains.
More watches or warnings could be issued later tonight if storms continue to strengthen. Stay tuned to local weather updates and NOAA Weather Radio.
