Amarillo, TX – Residents across the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles should prepare for the possibility of severe storms Monday afternoon through the night, with forecasters warning that tornadoes cannot be ruled out.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, storms are expected to develop Monday afternoon and intensify into the evening. The primary hazards include large hail up to golf ball size, wind gusts as high as 70 miles per hour, and a very low but present tornado threat.

The storm risk covers much of the region, including Amarillo, Dumas, Guymon, Canadian, and surrounding communities. Areas in the northeastern Panhandle face the highest severe weather probabilities. Rain chances are also set to return after a brief break on Sunday, with the heaviest activity expected Monday evening.

Forecasters emphasized that while tornado probabilities remain low, residents should remain alert. “Thunderstorms could be severe, with large hail and damaging wind gusts the primary hazards,” the NWS said, adding that an isolated tornado or two cannot be ruled out.

The public is urged to keep up with forecast updates as conditions may change rapidly. Those in affected areas should review their severe weather safety plans and prepare to take shelter if warnings are issued.
