Amarillo, Texas – A flood watch is in effect tonight across much of the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles as thunderstorms bring the risk of flash flooding to roads, rivers, and low-lying areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, the watch begins at 7 p.m. Friday and continues through late tonight. The alert includes Armstrong, Potter, Randall, Deaf Smith, and Carson counties in Texas, as well as Cimarron and Texas counties in Oklahoma. Heavy rainfall from slow-moving storms could overwhelm creeks and drainage systems, leading to hazardous travel conditions.
Communities from Amarillo to Canyon and as far north as Dalhart and Dumas may see localized flooding in urban streets, rural roadways, and near Palo Duro Canyon State Park. Drivers are urged to avoid crossing water-covered roads and remain alert for sudden washouts in flood-prone areas.
Officials caution that excessive runoff could cause quick rises in streams and rivers, especially in Hutchinson and Hansford counties where soils remain saturated. Residents should charge phones, prepare to move to higher ground if needed, and follow updates from local emergency management.
The flood watch remains in effect through the overnight hours, with additional advisories possible if storms linger into Saturday.
