Oklahoma City, OK – A heat advisory has been issued for a large portion of Oklahoma and northern Texas, lasting from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. CDT today, with heat index values expected to climb as high as 110°F. This extreme heat could pose significant health risks for those exposed to prolonged outdoor conditions.

According to the National Weather Service, the heat advisory encompasses cities and counties throughout central, northern, eastern, and western Oklahoma, as well as northern Texas. Temperatures paired with high humidity will make it feel much hotter than the actual air temperature. Areas affected include Oklahoma City, Norman, Tulsa, Wichita Falls, and Lawton, along with smaller cities like Ardmore, Enid, and Shawnee.

Residents are advised to stay indoors in air-conditioned environments during the hottest part of the day, especially those without access to air conditioning. If outdoor activities are necessary, it is essential to wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and limit strenuous tasks to the morning or evening hours. The elderly, young children, and those with pre-existing health conditions are particularly vulnerable to heat-related illnesses.

This heatwave comes as a reminder to take the appropriate steps to avoid heat exhaustion or heatstroke. Drinking plenty of fluids, wearing sunscreen, and checking on vulnerable neighbors and relatives are crucial actions.

The heat advisory is expected to be lifted by 7 p.m. CDT, but residents should remain vigilant for potential follow-up warnings.
