Oklahoma is bracing for critical fire weather conditions as near-record high temperatures and strong winds are expected Thursday. With highs projected to reach 90°F and gusty south winds, grassland fire risks in Tulsa and along the I-44 corridor will be elevated. Local authorities are urging residents to avoid activities that could spark fires and ensure any flames are fully extinguished.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Tulsa, the region is facing “enhanced to near-critical” fire spread conditions, with wind speeds likely reaching 15 to 20 mph and gusts up to 35 mph. Relative humidity values will also drop, creating a volatile combination for rapid fire spread. Grassland fire spread rates may reach up to 279 feet per minute. Residents should dispose of cigarettes properly and avoid idling vehicles over dry vegetation. Welding and other heat-generating activities should be kept away from grasslands during this high-risk period.

Looking beyond Thursday, fire risks will remain elevated throughout the weekend. NWS forecasters expect temperatures to peak again on Friday and Saturday, with highs near 90°F. Winds are likely to subside slightly, but the ongoing dry conditions will continue to increase the potential for grassland fires across the region.

For the rest of the week, Tulsa will experience mostly clear skies, with sunny days and mild nights, dropping into the low 60s. Showers are only slightly possible Thursday night, with no significant precipitation forecasted to alleviate the dry conditions. With the fire risk stretching through Monday, residents should stay updated on weather conditions and exercise extreme caution outdoors.
