Oklahoma City, OK – A statewide freeze watch is in effect across Oklahoma as residents brace for a sharp temperature drop late Sunday into Monday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Norman, the freeze watch begins at 1 a.m. CDT Monday and continues until 8 a.m. CDT. Temperatures are expected to fall as low as 27°F in areas including Oklahoma City, Norman, Enid, Lawton, and Ardmore, as well as smaller communities statewide.
The cold snap follows gusty winds Saturday that reached up to 45 mph in central and western parts of the state. As those winds subside, clear skies and calm conditions will allow overnight lows to dip below freezing. The combination could be especially damaging to unprotected plants, crops, and outdoor plumbing.
In southern Oklahoma, Bryan and Atoka Counties are included in the alert. North Texas counties such as Wichita, Knox, and Archer are also under the same freeze watch, with similar impacts expected.
Residents are urged to cover or bring indoors any sensitive vegetation and to insulate exposed water pipes. Farmers and gardeners should take immediate steps to protect vulnerable crops from freeze damage.
Temperatures are expected to rebound slightly Monday afternoon, but another cold morning may follow on Tuesday.
