Oklahoma City, OK – Sunlight spills across the plains this morning as Oklahoma wakes to a brief taste of spring in mid-December. After a chilly start in the upper 30s, temperatures are set to surge into the mid-60s today, driven by gusty southwest winds up to 24 mph.
But this early-winter warmth won’t last long. Meteorologists expect a sharp temperature drop beginning late Friday, as north winds return and highs tumble from the mid-50s into the 30s by Sunday. Lows could dip into the 20s across central Oklahoma, marking the coldest air of December so far.
According to the National Weather Service in Norman, skies will remain mostly clear through Saturday, but a reinforcing shot of arctic air will spill south Sunday, cutting temperatures nearly 40 degrees from Thursday’s high. “It’s the kind of snap that reminds you winter’s here,” one forecaster said.
Travelers planning early holiday drives should prepare for breezy, colder conditions Sunday, especially along I-35 and I-40 where wind chills could dip into the teens during the morning hours. While no snow is expected locally, models hint at wintry weather possible north of Kansas into the Great Lakes as this same system strengthens.
Five-Day Outlook:
- Friday: Sunny, high 55°F.
- Saturday: Mostly clear, high 54°F, low 20°F.
- Sunday: Sunny, high 35°F, low 26°F.
- Monday: Mostly sunny, high 52°F.
- Tuesday: Partly cloudy, high near 80°F — a brief warm rebound.
