Oklahoma City, OK – Residents across central Oklahoma felt the ground shake early Sunday morning when a magnitude 3.7 earthquake struck near Sparks.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake occurred at 3:17 a.m. local time Sunday about 8 kilometers southeast of Sparks, at a shallow depth of 2.3 kilometers. Tremors were reported in Shawnee, Norman, and Oklahoma City, though no major damage or injuries have been confirmed.
The Oklahoma Geological Survey said more than 100 people submitted reports of feeling the shaking, with most describing it as a brief but noticeable jolt. Residents as far as Stillwater and Tulsa also reported minor vibrations.
While magnitude 3.7 quakes are considered minor, their shallow depth often makes them more noticeable. In Oklahoma, seismic activity is monitored closely due to the state’s history of increased earthquake frequency linked to wastewater injection from oil and gas operations.
Authorities advise residents to review basic earthquake safety measures, such as “Drop, Cover, and Hold On,” especially since even minor quakes can cause structural damage in older buildings or trigger rockfalls in rural areas.
No aftershocks have been recorded as of Sunday morning, but geologists will continue to monitor the area for additional seismic activity.
