Ohio — A thin dusting of snow slides across dark pavement early this morning, barely visible until headlights catch the shimmer. Roads may look harmless at first, but cold surfaces are already allowing slick spots to form during the commute.

The National Weather Service in Wilmington reports light snow moving across southwest Ohio, southeast Indiana, and northern Kentucky this morning. While amounts remain light, the combination of snow and cold ground temperatures means brief icy patches are possible, especially on bridges and untreated roads.

In Cincinnati, Dayton, and surrounding communities, snow chances linger through today with highs near 40. A rain-and-snow mix may develop briefly this afternoon before colder air reasserts itself. Drivers along I-71, I-75, and I-74 should remain alert for rapidly changing conditions over short distances.

Tonight into Saturday, additional light snow accumulation is possible, though totals remain modest. Even small amounts can matter this time of year. Melting during daylight hours may refreeze after sunset, raising the risk of black ice by Saturday night.

Sunday turns colder and calmer, but the bigger story arrives late Sunday night. Arctic air pushes into the Ohio Valley, sending wind chills near or below zero through early next week. Monday morning and MLK Day will feel biting, with highs only reaching the low 20s.

By Monday night and Tuesday morning, wind chills may again dip near zero, making early travel and outdoor activities uncomfortable and potentially dangerous without proper protection. Bundle exposed skin, check vehicles, and allow extra time for morning starts.

Winter’s grip tightens as January deepens. Conditions may look quiet at times, but subtle hazards can still develop quickly. Are you seeing slick spots or light snow where you live? Share what you’re experiencing across the Ohio Valley.
