Ohio — Breath turns visible instantly across central Ohio this morning as deep cold locks in. Pavement looks dry now, but that calm is misleading. A fast-moving winter system lines up to bring snow, falling temperatures, and dangerous wind chills to Columbus and surrounding counties by Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, hazardous weather remains limited today. Conditions change quickly Friday as snow develops during the late morning and afternoon. One to two inches of snow are possible across central Ohio, including Franklin, Delaware, Fairfield, Licking, and Madison counties.

Snow spreads steadily through Friday afternoon, impacting travel during peak hours. Roads like I-70, I-71, and Route 315 could turn slick quickly as temperatures hover near freezing. Visibility may drop at times as snowfall rates briefly increase.

Friday night marks the sharper turn. As the cold front sweeps through, winds increase and temperatures fall fast. Any moisture left on roadways may freeze solid. This raises the risk for flash freezing on untreated surfaces, sidewalks, and bridges.

By late Friday night into Saturday morning, wind chills drop to between 5 and 15 degrees below zero. Even short exposure could be dangerous. Layers, hats, gloves, and face coverings become essential. Check pets, protect pipes, and limit time outdoors.

Saturday stays brutally cold despite some sunshine. Highs struggle to reach the mid-teens. Flurries remain possible early, then skies partially clear. Sunday moderates slightly, but highs stay in the 20s with lingering cold ground conditions.

Looking ahead, early next week shows gradual improvement. Temperatures climb into the 30s Monday and near 40 by Tuesday. NOAA’s 6–10 day outlook suggests above-normal temperatures by mid to late next week, signaling a February thaw after this arctic blast.

Plan extra travel time Friday, prepare for dangerous cold this weekend, and stay alert as conditions change fast. How slick are roads in your area right now?
