Parkersburg, WV – A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. today for portions of northeast Kentucky, southeast Ohio, and western West Virginia, including many communities along the Ohio–West Virginia border, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Charleston. A brief period of freezing rain is expected to create a light glaze of ice, leading to hazardous road conditions during the busy morning commute.
According to NWS Charleston, temperatures early this morning will hover at or just below freezing in locations such as Parkersburg, Athens, Marietta, Gallipolis, Pomeroy, Ironton, Huntington, Point Pleasant, and nearby towns. Areas prone to cold air drainage—valleys, low-lying spots, and shaded roadways—may experience freezing rain the longest before temperatures rise above 32°F later in the morning.
Even a light glaze can produce very slippery sidewalks, bridges, and untreated roads, especially on elevated surfaces. Drivers traveling along major routes such as I-77, US-50, US-33, and OH-32 may encounter sudden slick spots through mid-morning. Forecasters warn that the freezing rain may last long enough to create disruptions for commuters, school transportation, and early-morning deliveries.
The icing threat is expected to end by 10 a.m., when warmer air pushes temperatures above freezing and precipitation transitions to plain rain. Light rain may continue into the late morning and early afternoon, but travel hazards should gradually diminish once roads thaw.
NWS officials advise residents to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and stay alert for black ice, particularly on bridges and overpasses. Isolated power-line icing is possible but not expected to be widespread.
Communities across Athens, Meigs, Gallia, Vinton, Jackson, Lawrence (OH), Mason, Cabell, and Wood (WV) should remain weather-aware during the early morning hours.
