Charleston, West Virginia – Heavy rain moving across the Tri-State region could flood low-lying roads along I-64 and I-77 before the Wednesday afternoon commute, as up to 2 inches of rainfall pushes rivers and creeks toward bankfull levels.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a Flood Watch remains in effect through Wednesday afternoon for portions of northeast Kentucky, southeast Ohio and much of central and western West Virginia. Rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches are expected across the watch area, with isolated higher amounts possible in heavier bands.

Excessive runoff may cause small streams and creeks to rise quickly, especially in flood-prone communities near the Kanawha, Ohio and Guyandotte rivers. Urban areas including Charleston, Huntington and Parkersburg could see water ponding on roadways, particularly along I-64, I-77 and Route 50 where drainage systems become overwhelmed.

In southeast Ohio, areas near Athens, Gallipolis and Pomeroy should monitor water levels along the Hocking and Ohio rivers. Northeast Kentucky communities such as Ashland and Louisa may also experience rising creeks and standing water in low-lying neighborhoods.

Drivers should never attempt to cross water-covered roads. Just a few inches of moving water can sweep a vehicle away. Residents in flood-prone areas should clear storm drains, secure outdoor belongings and prepare to move to higher ground if warnings are issued.

The heaviest rainfall is expected through Wednesday morning, with rivers continuing to respond into the afternoon. Additional Flood Warnings may be issued if water levels rise more rapidly than forecast.
